Beer has a long history in Turkey, dating back to ancient times. The Hittites, who lived in Turkey in the 2nd millennium BCE, were known to brew beer using barley, and the ancient Egyptians and Greeks also consumed beer.

During the Ottoman Empire, beer was consumed mainly by foreigners and was considered a luxury item. It wasn't until the late 1800s and early 1900s, during the late Ottoman period and the Republic of Turkey, that beer began to be produced and consumed more widely in Turkey.

In the early 20th century, beer production in Turkey was done mainly by small, local breweries. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, the government nationalized many breweries and consolidated them into larger, state-owned companies. This led to a decline in the quality and variety of beer produced in Turkey.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Turkish government began liberalizing the beer market and privatizing state-owned breweries. This led to an increase in the number of smaller, independent breweries and the variety and quality of beer produced in Turkey.

Nowadays, Turkey has a growing craft beer scene, and many microbreweries are popping up around the country.

However, Beer consumption in Turkey is still relatively low compared to other countries, and the traditional drink of choice is Raki, an anise-flavored spirit, and wine. But, the beer industry is expected to grow in the future due to the increasing popularity of beer and the growing demand for it among younger Turkish consumers.

Here are my top five places for craft beer in Istanbul

1- The Populist by Torch Brewery

The Populist by Torch Brewery is my spouse's and my favorite spot. We visit very often. The burgers are delicious, and the German-style beer is my personal favorite. It's located in a historic brewery building alongside two other restaurants. Live music is also occasionally featured, adding to the overall experience.

2- Bosphorus Brewing Company

This place is highly recommended for its creative and tasty food, as well as its unique beers. The mini burgers were particularly noteworthy, and the service was friendly and professional. The commenter and their partner had a great experience and planned to return.

3- Craft Beer Lab

This place is an excellent spot for a casual date or hanging out with friends. The garden setting is relaxed, with soft background music and polite staff. The selection of local and imported beers is impressive, and the salads are delicious. While the bar food may not be the main attraction, it is still enjoyable when slightly tipsy. The craft beer selection, including Turkish brewery options, is fantastic, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Overall, it's lovely, with great food and beer, making it well worth a visit.
